Youth and the Federal Budget

Image
The Federal governments’  latest budget  is aimed at reducing Greenhouse Gases, GHGs, by at least 36% by 2030. They are relying on “private markets to develop and shift in the direction.” Private markets? Where does that leave our youth? Where does that leave a young family trying to start out? Clearly the government “consulted” with their big business friends on this one. Did they consult with youth? With racialized people? Of course not. They know full well that their approach will leave our youth and disenfranchised carrying the burden of the costs. Why? Well for starters it is too little, too late. The climate is changing - now. Our youth want to see their parents doing something about it - now. Secondly, the Liberals’ past record is abysmal. According to the  Climate Action Tracker , Canada’s record to date is “insufficient.” Youth hear that Canada will “ be in the vanguard ” but don’t see any real change, or anyone really listening to them. What is the PMO and why should we care?

Image
The PMO, Prime Minister's Office , concentrated power in Ottawa under Pierre Trudeau and has remained the third and most opaque wing of Canadian government since then. The PMO makes Canadian government similar to American government which also has 3 arms, Congress, Senate and President. In Canada we have the House of Commons, the Senate and now the PMO which is staffed by unelected party insiders who have the Prime Ministers' ear more than our elected MPs. Unlike the US, this third arm in Canada is unofficial. It is not in our constitution. In Canada the PMO has been linked to scandals such as the Duffy trial under the Conservatives and dealings with SNC Lavalin and the We charity under the current regime. A couple of years ago the PMO quietly did “ loyalty checks ” on potential Supreme Court appointments, a position that is supposed to be non-partisan. So why should we care? Don't we expect that our elected representative, a member of the ruling party, should have t...

Milton Youth Organizing

Image
Hi everyone, It’s a shame that I don’t know more of you personally, but I’m Keiran Gorsky, the youth representative from the Milton NDP. You might have seen me around at some of our events, like at the election night dinner in 2019. Before the next election comes around, whenever that may be, I want to get young people involved. Something I’ve noticed over the past 4 years, is that while younger people are some of the most energized when it comes to political change, they don’t always have a place to use that energy. That’s why I want to start by forming the NDP Milton youth council. In the short term, I want people my age to learn more about our platform, and what we stand for. Through monthly meetings, we could talk a bit about issues that matter to us, and what we want to see in the future. In the long term, I hope to give everyone the opportunity to become involved in the community, and as volunteers in general. In your household, are their young people, under 25, interested ...

The Green Transition and Jobs

Image
When Jack Layton called for a Carbon Tax he was soundly rebuffed. Now here we are ten years later. The fact is the NDP is always ahead of the curve in progressive thinking. Calls for a carbon tax or pharmacare or long term care reform are not the job destroying, unfair taxing chaos the reds and blues would have you think they are. Their big business buddies aren’t ready for change and so they stir up rhetoric that “sounds OK so it must be true.” Some parties would have you think that a move to a green economy will chase jobs out of Canada. Malarkey. A 2017 OECD report states that “To the extent that it can be predicted, it does not appear that the transition towards green growth is likely to imply rates of labour reallocation or rates of change in job skill demands that are outside of historical experience . . . especially for medium and high skilled workers.” So while the reds are 10 years behind where they ought to be and the blues are trying to push us even further back in time we...
