Jack Layton

Sunday marked 10 years since we lost Jack Layton. This is a part of the letter he wrote just before he passed away. This section was addressed to all Canadians. “Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can ...

Liberal scandal

Our April 18 message was about the PMO, Canada’s 4th unelected tier of power, and why it needs to go. The Saturday Aug 7 Globe and Mail interview with Jody Wilson-Raybould reminded us that we are not alone. When asked if she felt that Liberals worked as a team she replied that they appeared to at first. “There was more control that was exerted as time went on by the Prime Minister’s Office, by unelected, unaccountable people in that office. And that was not what I signed up for.” She went on to say she felt handled by the PMO. As our Attorney General she still had to go through the PMO in order to talk to Trudeau. This is the very top level of our government, where communication between the PM and the top justice official had to go through unelected party hacks! Jody Wilson-Reybould said “I had my eyes opened wide about the nature of hyper-partisanship or blind loyalty when it comes to politics. And for me being loyal to a party versus loyal to ideas creates a toxicity around not a...

Liberals need to learn what kindergardeners already know

Image
The Ontario kindergarten curriculum states that students need to “work individually and with others, share and discuss ideas, and listen to ideas”. The Liberal party is acting like a bunch of kindergarteners trying and failing, to learn this lesson. They can’t stand to be part of a government that is working the way a government is supposed to work. Through consensus. With a pending 4th wave in the Covid 19 pandemic, they are thinking about holding a general election. Why? Well for no better reason than to hold a majority. So they can do what they want. Stamped it. Had it. No take-backs! Perhaps the Liberal party’s hacks think now is a good time. People are focused on needles and masks. They won’t remember the SNC Lavalin affair or their treatment of Jody Wilson-Reybold who refused to interfere with the due process of law to soothe their hyper partisan soles. Perhaps they will forget that Trudeau is just a drama teacher who appeared in blackface at school events and, after being...

Emancipation Day

Image
On Sunday we celebrated Emancipation Day in Canada. There were lots of comments on Social Media about how we have not done enough, gone far enough and about how other racialized groups are also struggling. And they are not wrong. But the day is about celebrating how far we have come, not how much further we need to go. It is remembering and learning from our history that enables us to take the next steps. So let’s celebrate the educators that are trying to fix the lack of Black history in School curriculums in Nova Scotia , BC and Ontario . We spent some time going through these resources. Very well done indeed. We will remember John Graves Simcoe’s act to end slavery in Upper Canada and Walter Perry who organized the Emacipation Day parade in Windsor for 35 years. We can reflect on the life of Viola Desmond as she looks at us every time we pull out a tenner and we can’t help but think of Lincoln Alexander every time we drive the “Linc” in Hamilton. Canada’s NDP, the Ontario NDP and t...
