Liberals need to learn what kindergardeners already know

 


The Ontario kindergarten curriculum states that students need to “work individually and with others, share and discuss ideas, and listen to ideas”. The Liberal party is acting like a bunch of kindergarteners trying and failing, to learn this lesson. They can’t stand to be part of a government that is working the way a government is supposed to work. Through consensus. With a pending 4th wave in the Covid 19 pandemic, they are thinking about holding a general election. Why? Well for no better reason than to hold a majority. So they can do what they want. Stamped it. Had it. No take-backs!


Perhaps the Liberal party’s hacks think now is a good time. People are focused on needles and masks. They won’t remember the SNC Lavalin affair or their treatment of Jody Wilson-Reybold who refused to interfere with the due process of law to soothe their hyper partisan soles. Perhaps they will forget that Trudeau is just a drama teacher who appeared in blackface at school events and, after being elected, decided it was OK to holiday at the Aga Khan’s private island, on the Aga’s dime and despite the Aga’s foundation being a listed lobbyist. It was only last year but maybe the voters will forget the WE charity scandal. What’s so bad about giving away a sole-source contract to our close friends? Really?


Please listen carefully to the rhetoric in the next couple of weeks. There will be all kinds of reasons given but the real reason is clear. Unlike kindergarteners, Liberals don’t share.

“NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said the Prime Minister clearly wants an election because Mr. Trudeau is seeking a majority government. The Liberals currently have a minority mandate.

“He wants power for power’s sake; not because he can’t get things done,” Mr. Singh said in an interview. “We’ve shown in the pandemic when it comes to getting people help, we are there.”

If there is any time that there should be a pause on “raw pursuit of power,” it should be during one of the worst crises in the country’s history, Mr. Singh said. New Democrats will follow public-health advice if an election is called, he said, adding that he is fully vaccinated, along with the party’s team.”

Tax Avoidance

65 years ago Canadian corporations collectively paid about the same amount of tax as private Canadians. Today private citizens collectively pay 3 times as much as Canadian corporations. “In an average year, the 102 biggest companies in Canada pay $10.5 billion less than they would if they paid tax at the official corporate tax rate.” - Toronto Star. But when Revenue Canada tries to recoup 4.4 billion due to offshore tax evasion they can expect to get, maybe half. - National Post Groups like Taxfairness have plenty of straight forward ideas to turn this around. Like a financial activities tax: “Canada’s biggest banks and insurance companies remained profitable through the financial crisis and topped the list of large corporations making higher profits than usual during the pandemic. A Financial Activities Tax could also help cool the over-heating asset market, including housing. UNDRIP

This weekend the Globe and Mail reported that several provincial governments want more time to examine the legislation that would apply the principles of UNDRIP (the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples). With this bill in place UNDRIP principles would interpret existing laws while helping to shape any future law making. The legislation is built on NDP MP Romeo Sagansh’s private members bill that passed third reading then died when the 2019 election was called. The list of detractors, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta etc. reads like a list of Conservative Provincial governments in Canada. They want more time for discussions with their “ industry stakeholders and Indigenous communities.” Notice how they put “industry stakeholders” before “Indigenous Peoples”?
